Cars
My interest in cars, stems from their aesthetic beauty, where, curves, lines, colour and the added dynamic of speed create a sense of excitement and adventure .. compelling me to paint them .
In many ways, I have sought to depict the history/ style and grandeur they hold, prized , as they are, sitting, or moving on the road.. occupying a place now, in time, which suggests a story and a particular cultural period to me.
For example: On my first trip to USA late 70’s I took many pictures and made sketches of yellow cabs, Sedans’, Buick’s, Mustangs’ etc in New York.. the freeways and San Francisco.
I worked in a ‘Gas’ station.. fuelled with, a sense of wonder as I filled them , and drove them through cities and coastlines.
It has been an imperative to revisit this theme latterly in paint, where I’ve sought to create images which edify these cars as monuments to the time they and I existed in.. which live on in my imagination.. made material, now, on canvas.
