Portraits

Portraits fall into two categories for me:

One where an immediate likeness is unimportant..in these I have no particular preconceived ideas, rather, I’m hoping to express myself in ways, where I discover new and exciting approaches to using paint.. which, at the same time, capture the essence of the subject.. character , revealing, hopefully, the identity of the person, and perhaps much more, than the mere surface appearance, a slavish imitation from a photograph might show.

When painting a commission, my aim is to capture a likeness of the sitter without compromising my style.. it’s often a delicate balance between capturing the persons character and physical features accurately and rendering in paint my own character. It’s satisfying to complete such a task, when the last brushstroke is executed.. and in the many hours of reflection.. the painting often.. tells the painter to drop the brush!
